Cricket Hunt School General Information
School Calendar & Early Release Days
Cricket Hunt School follows the public school calendar for vacations and legal holidays. We are closed on all legal holidays, Christmas, and winter and spring vacations. Cricket Hunt schedules weekly Early Release days. All students are dismissed beginning at 11:45 am on Fridays. Please consult our calendar for a list of exact dates. Please note these days may not coincide with the public school’s in-service or early release days.
Parents may choose to participate in our extended afternoon program on early release days until 3:00. There may be an additional charge for early release activity fees.
Cancellation & Early Dismissal
In the event of snowstorms or other dangerous weather conditions, school cancellation announcements will be made by 7:00 am on local television and radio stations. Please assume that if Freeport Public Schools are closed, so are we.
If school should be in session prior to or during an unexpected snowstorm, we encourage parents to pick up their child(ren) early. If it should be necessary to end school early, we will follow instructions on your Emergency Information form.
Attendance & Absence
Attendance is recorded daily and formally submitted to the State of Maine each year. If your child is going to be absent from or late arriving to school, please contact the office prior to the start of the school day. If your family is planning to be away on vacation, likewise, please contact us regarding your child’s absence prior to your vacation.
Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
It is very important for your child’s sense of connectedness to her peers to arrive on time each day. We begin our day promptly at 8:20 am with a greeting and an outline of the day’s activities. Tardy drop-off disrupts the start of the day and can often make a child feel uncomfortable as she attempts to enter into an established and settled group. Also, it is very important for children to have a few moments of conversation with their friends before they transition into the day’s work.
As you arrive, please accompany your child into the school building or check in with the drop off duty teacher. If you arrive after school begins, please let someone in the office know you are present. Otherwise, escort your child to the play area outside (inside to his classroom in inclement weather) to “connect” with the teacher on duty.
Please note that your child’s teacher may not be available before school without a prearranged appointment. If your child’s teacher is not “on duty” this is an important preparation time for the start of your child’s day, please be respectful of this time. You may contact your child’s teacher directly to arrange a meeting. However, if you find yourself in need of immediate assistance, the Director will be happy to assist you.
Transportation & Pick-up Policy
For the safety and well being of your child, we will allow your child to leave Cricket Hunt School with only those persons who are listed as “authorized” on your Emergency Form. If you need someone else (other than those individuals specified on the authorized list) to pick up your child, please:
1. Tell your child personally – if time allows
2. Send a written/dated note to the office stating the person’s first and last name (in an emergency, a phone call to the office will suffice)
3. Let your pick up person know that we will ask for photo identification upon their arrival before we release your child to their care
If these steps are not followed, please be advised that we will not release your child. If it is an end of the day dismissal, we will follow instructions on your Emergency Information Card. Please follow our guidelines carefully, they are for the protection of your child and can eliminate any uncomfortable situations when someone not familiar to us comes to pick up a child.
Teachers at Cricket Hunt School use outside trips to enhance and fully integrate concepts being taught in the classroom. Children learn a great deal from interaction with their community and the world outside of their classroom walls. When a field trip is scheduled, you will be notified of the details by your child’s teacher, or through our weekly “News and Notes.”
You are always welcome to join us but van transportation is limited to the students and teachers and you may be asked to drive yourself or carpool with other parents to the final destination. In addition to teacher notification, you are asked to sign a “blanket permission” form at the start of each school year, allowing your child to participate on our trips.
Fire drills are held in accordance with state law, and exit routes are clearly posted throughout the building. Teachers are responsible for instructing children in the proper manner and route for exiting during drills.
Traffic and Parking
The driveway off of Independence Drive leading to the school building is a single direction traffic loop. If you are dropping off your child, please pull up to the entrance ramp at the front of the building. If you are escorting your child inside, please drive slowly (to the left of the drop-off point) and park in the parking lot. For your safety and the safety of your child, drive slowly and do not allow your child to cross the parking area unescorted.
If you are entering the driveway behind the school van, please stop your vehicle until the van has completely unloaded its passengers, just as you would stop for a school bus. Thank you for helping us to ensure the safety of everyone.
At pick up time, please travel and park in the parking lot in the same manner as described above. For appropriate pick up procedures, please see “Arrival/Dismissal Procedures.”
